Google and Tamil Nadu partner up to build an AI ecosystem

Google and the Government of Tamil Nadu signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on August 31, 2024, to promote innovation and advance technology in the region. The partnership will concentrate on projects that support AI start-ups, talent development, and the industrial ecosystem, which includes MSMEs, to develop scalable, effective AI solutions.

The partnership is expected to affect some areas, including public services, industry, education, and skill development. In the end, this will help Tamil Nadu expand and modernise as a whole.

At Google’s Mountain View headquarters, a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the company and the Tamil Nadu government. Senior Google executives Amit Zaveri and Nanda Ramachandran, along with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and Industries Minister TRB Rajaa, were present at the event. During the Memorandum of Understanding exchange, there were also the Secretary, Industries, Investment Promotion and Commerce Department, Tamil Nadu, and the MD & CEO, Guidance Tamil Nadu.

Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)

Delegates from Tamilnadu discussed expanding the manufacturing of Pixel 8 phones, skill development, education, startups, and innovations, Enabling MSMEs (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises) and the Rural Economy. 

“We are happy to collaborate with Google on advanced manufacturing, including the recently announced Made in India Pixel 8 phone being manufactured in Tamil Nadu,” said Industries Minister TRB Rajaa, underscoring the significance of the cooperation. 

The minister also highlighted the state’s premier youth training programme, “Naan Mudhalavan,” and stated that the state is dedicated to providing 20 lakh youth with cutting-edge AI skills to prepare them for the future. 

Google Could Head of Platform Amit Zvery stated, “We look forward to working together to build a thriving AI ecosystem in Tamil Nadu—one that not only drives innovation and creates opportunities but also empowers individuals with the skills they need to succeed in the digital age.”

The CM also paid visits to Microsoft’s and Apple’s headquarters. The team visited Microsoft and had a meeting with the senior leadership team and Ryan Roslansky, CEO of LinkedIn. The creation of a global capability centre and the development of Tamil Nadu’s data center infrastructure were two of the major prospects that were discussed.

According to industry expert Jibu Elias, “Tamil Nadu is the first government in the country to come up with a safe and ethical AI policy.”.  “It has one of the most vibrant policy ecosystems, among all the states. In Bengaluru, it is the private sector that is taking most of the initiatives.”
